When Jimmy Webb talks about Motown, he does not talk about chart positions or studio tricks. He talks about an education. In his words, he had “the educational experience of my life at Motown,” and it all revolved around one deceptively simple question the writers and producers there asked over and over again.
“Yeah, but where’s the message?”

Motown pushed him to think beyond chord progressions and melodic flair. The emphasis was always on what you are carrying in the song. What is the emotional payload? What do you want the listener to walk away with? Until that was clear, nothing else mattered.
Jimmy said he took that challenge “very, very seriously,” and it never once let him down. He does not claim to have written the greatest songs in history, yet he points out something essential. By and large, his songs have an A B C structure, a beginning, middle, and end. They are stories, fully formed, with somewhere to go and something to say.
That was the Motown mindset. Not just hooks. Not just grooves. A message. A story. A journey.
And that lesson shaped Jimmy Webb for life.
